baits shot his wife, jennifer, and then killed himself around 7:30 saturday morning. >> she was running around and yelling, i got someone to help her, help her. and the gunman, who was on the passenger side, took a gun and he shot her. >> reporter: the murder/suicide happened in this quiet montclair townhome community as neighbors watched in stunned disbelief. >> i'm panicking. i'm like what is going on? so i immediately dialed 911, and shortly after that, he shot himself. >> reporter: the bates lived 15 miles away and it's not clear what they were doing in montclair. >> she was bleeding profusely from her head. and he -- i called 911. the gun was laying by him. so hi my neighbor, nick, kicked the gun away from him. >> reporter: we know after the domestic incident in june, an emergency protective order was filed in court, barring the husband and wife from contacting one another. but that order expired, and it was not extended. it's hard to say if it had been in effect, whether it would have changed the outcome of this tragic incident. in montclair, i'm armando trull, 9 news now. >> poli
